2012 will feature a rare astronomical event where the transit of Venus will pass it across the sun on the 6th June. Although Lancelin is a great vantage point to view the event, you will get an even better up close view from the nearby Gingin Observatory, which is holding a special evening to mark the event.
This is the same astronomical event that Captain James Cook sailed into the Pacific Ocean to observe back in 1769, so its historical importance can not be underestimated. The bad news is that if you miss it, you probably wont be around the next time Venus makes the passage, which is not expected until the year 2117.
